Golf Trip Games

These are golf games that I recommend being played for a golf trip. I have played and experimented with numerous golf betting games over the past 30 years and have found that these are not only the most enjoyable, but they are also the easiest to manage for groups of 8 to 16 players.  At the bottom are some general tips for these trips.

Two Man Better Ball Of Partners

  • To be played over three rounds.
  • A low handicapper partnered with a higher handicapper.
    • Example: A player with B player.
  • On the last nine holes of the 3rd round both balls will count.
  • For the final nine holes on the 3rd round a  maximum stroke taken is three shots over your handicap on any given hole.
Ryder Cup Format
  • To be played over two rounds.
  • First round, two man better ball of partners. 1 point for the win / one half point for the tie / zero point for the loss.
  • Second round, single match play (mano y mano). 1 point for the win / one half point for the tie / zero point for the loss.

Progressive

  • One best ball (first hole) / two best balls (second hole) / three best balls (third hole) of the 4 players and then start the progression over on the fourth hole.

Better Ball Of Partners Types

  • One best ball the front nine and two best balls the back nine, with a four man team.
  • Two best balls the front nine and three best balls the back nine, with a four man team.
  • Two best balls all 18 holes, with a four man team.
  • Three best balls all 18 holes, with a four man team.
  • Three best balls on all par threes / two best balls on all par fours / one best ball on all par fives.

Medal Play

Skins

  • Gross and Net, but you cannot win both on the same hole.

General Suggestions

  • No shambles, no scrambles, no alternate shot. Everyone plays their own ball and gets their own score to post per round.
  • All games on every round played at $30 per player.
  • Skins game played at $10 per player per round.
  • By doing all the team games and skins, we have managed to keep out the individual betting between the players.
  • We collect all the money prior to leaving for the golf trip.
  • We pay out all the skins and every golf round winner at the end of the trip.
  • One of our players does a recap, an XL spreadsheet for everyone.
  • We used to figure out all the payouts during the trip, but it took away from the enjoyable evening with the group. Two or three of us would be figuring the payouts, while the rest of the group is enjoying themselves at the bar.

General Tips

  • We play 36 holes most of the trips. 18 holes on the first day of the trip, 18 holes on the last day of the trip and then, 36 holes per day for all the other days.
  • We first played nine rounds at nine different courses. The problem was that there was no time for lunch between rounds. Because we were too busy rushing from one course to another course. Now we stay on the same course for 36 holes. This way it’s a lot easier. There is no travel time between courses. We all have time to have lunch together. More relaxing plus we are not rushed between rounds.
  • We have determined that team games are the best way to go, since this keeps the individual gambling out of the rounds, and keeps all the players in all the games. Especially, if someone is having a lousy round of golf or having several bad holes during that round, generally they’re playing partners will keep them in the game.
  • We used to play the Orange ball game, but everyone just hated that game so much that they all threaten to kill me if we every played it again. This is where every foursome has one orange ball that the foursome has to rotate amongst the players on every hole and only the score on that orange ball would count for that hole. If someone happened to lose the orange ball on any given hole, then that group would have to buy back in for $5 by buying another orange ball. There’s a lot of pressure on the golfer who has that orange ball for that hole.
